Panic strikes as 4.7-magnitude earthquake rattles Nairobi, surrounding areas

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Nairobi on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, 2024, sending waves of panic through the bustling city and surrounding regions.

The quake, which had a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers, occurred at approximately 8:32 pm local time, according to data from VolcanoDiscovery and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The tremors were widely felt across Nairobi, impacting areas such as Kitengela, Ruaka, and Westlands. Residents in other regions, including Isinya, Kajiado County, Kirinyanga, Kisii, Nyeri, and Murang, also reported feeling the quake. The shaking, which lasted around 30 seconds, left many residents in a state of alarm.

Kenya’s Rift Valley and the Kavirondo (Nyanza) Rift are known for their seismic activity, typically experiencing earthquakes with local magnitudes (Ml) ranging from 2.0 to 5.0. While the region is no stranger to seismic events, the intensity and spread of this quake were notable.

Initial reports indicate that the earthquake’s impact varied across different areas: Magadi (Population: 14,500) – Located just 15 kilometers from the epicenter, residents likely experienced light shaking. Kajiado (Population: 11,200) – Situated 67 kilometers from the epicenter, this area may have felt weak shaking. Ngong (Population: 9,500) – Approximately 78 kilometers from the epicenter, also likely experienced weak shaking.

Beyond these areas, other towns and cities felt the tremors to varying degrees: Kikuyu (Population: 323,900) – 86 kilometers from the epicenter, likely felt very weak shaking. Narok (Population: 36,100) – 91 kilometers away, likely experienced very weak shaking. Nairobi (Population: 2,750,500) – 95 kilometers from the epicenter, felt the quake moderately. Limuru (Population: 159,300) – 96 kilometers away, felt very weak shaking. Athi River (Population: 24,500) – 99 kilometers from the epicenter, experienced very weak shaking.

While the initial seismic data suggests that the quake was perceptible to many, it is unlikely to have caused significant structural damage. Minor incidents such as objects falling from shelves and occasional broken windows have been reported, but no major casualties or damages have been confirmed. Seismologists continue to analyze the data to refine their calculations regarding the earthquake’s magnitude, epicenter, and depth. As the situation develops, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions in the event of aftershocks.

The event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic activity and the importance of preparedness in mitigating potential risks associated with earthquakes.
