Tragic landslide kills over 55 people in Ethiopia
A devastating landslide in southern Ethiopia has resulted in the loss of at least 55 lives.
The catastrophe occurred on Monday in a remote region following heavy rainfall. Local authorities have discovered more than 55 bodies so far, but they warn that the death toll may rise further.
According to Dagmawi Zerihun, the local chief quoted by the Gofa Zone Communications Affairs Department, the landslide took place around 10 am after the region experienced significant rainfall. Rescue efforts are currently underway, with search teams working tirelessly to find survivors.
This is not the first time the area has been struck by such a tragedy. In 2018, two separate landslides occurred within a week, claiming the lives of 32 individuals. The frequency of landslides in the region highlights the urgent need for comprehensive measures to prevent such disasters and protect the lives of the local population.
As the search for survivors continues, our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and the entire community.
The authorities are urged to take swift action to support the victims and implement measures to prevent future incidents of this nature.
