Villarruel stands firm, says ‘No colonial country can bully, intimidate Argentine citizens’

Argentina’s Vice-President, Victoria Villarruel, has condemned the Western media’s criticism of their alleged racist and homophobic chants during the Copa America title celebrations.
The vice-president made it clear that Argentina will not be swayed by bullying tactics from colonial countries.
The controversy began when a video went viral showing Enzo Fernandez, a player for Chelsea football club, and his Argentina teammates chanting derogatory songs mocking the heritage of the French national team.
The video was posted on Fernandez’s Instagram account after Argentina’s victory over Colombia in the Copa America final.
Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, reposted the video on social media, expressing his dismay and stating, “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.” Fernandez later apologized on Instagram for posting the video and any offense it may have caused.
In response to the backlash faced by the players, Chelsea Football Club initiated an internal disciplinary procedure. The club released a statement condemning all forms of discriminatory behavior and emphasizing their commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
However, Vice-President Villarruel has come to the defense of the players, asserting Argentina’s sovereignty and refusal to be intimidated by colonialist countries. She emphasized that Argentina has never had colonies or second-class citizens and has never imposed its way of life on others.
Villarruel highlighted the diverse contributions of the indigenous people, Europeans, Creoles, and Black individuals in building Argentina.
In a strongly worded post on her verified social media page, Villarruel called out the hypocrisy of those feigning indignation and accused them of trying to impose their own narrative on Argentina. She expressed her unwavering support for the players, addressing Enzo Fernandez directly and thanking Lionel Messi for his contributions to the national team.
She concluded her statement by reminding Argentines to always hold their heads high and proclaiming, “Long live Argentina!” Her resolute stance signifies Argentina’s determination to defend its players and refuse to be cowed by external pressures.
