Algeria launches presidential election campaign, candidates gear up for voter engagement
The campaign for Algeria’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for September 7, officially commenced on Thursday, marking the beginning of a 20-day period in which candidates will actively engage with citizens to present their electoral programs and secure votes.
The election features three candidates: Aouchiche Youcef of the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), independent candidate Tebboune Abdelmadjid, and Hassani Cherif Abdelaali from the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP).
Throughout the campaign, these candidates will host public meetings to connect with voters and articulate their visions for the country’s future.
In accordance with the organic law governing the electoral system, the campaign will adhere to specific rules designed to promote a respectful and fair political discourse. Candidates are explicitly prohibited from engaging in hate speech or any form of discrimination, ensuring a civil environment throughout the campaign.
Moreover, the use of foreign languages during the campaign is banned, and candidates cannot utilize resources or properties belonging to public or private entities for electoral purposes. Additionally, places of worship, public institutions, and educational establishments are off-limits for campaign activities, and any malicious use of state symbols is strictly forbidden.
To ensure equitable media access, all candidates are guaranteed fair opportunities to present their messages through authorized audiovisual media.
A drawing of lots was conducted last Saturday to allocate airtime fairly, overseen by Mohamed Charfi, President of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE).
Each candidate will receive six minutes of speaking time during their interventions, allowing them to effectively communicate their platforms to the electorate.
