Gambia: Ministry of Fisheries showcases progressive initiatives

Hon Musa Drammeh, the Minister of Fisheries, Water Resources, and National Assembly Matters, led a comprehensive briefing to President Adama Barrow and other high-ranking executives.

The forum illuminated the Ministry’s proactive measures and strategic action plans poised to revolutionize the fisheries sector and enhance water resource management in The Gambia.

A highlight of the session was the announcement by Mr. Buba Sanyang, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Fisheries, regarding the construction of 20 artisanal fishing boats. These boats are designed to support youth and women within the fishing sector, aiming to curb illegal migration by providing sustainable employment opportunities.

The project targets coastal fishing communities, migrant returnees, Gambian fishermen associations, and youth groups. “The boats are ready and awaiting testing before being handed over,” stated PS Sanyang, emphasizing the project’s imminent impact.

Mr. Sanyang also introduced the Fish 4 ACP project, a collaborative effort between the Ministry and donor partners aimed at fostering sustainable aquaculture development. This initiative focuses on unlocking the potential of oysters in The Gambia, enhancing processing and handling techniques, and ultimately contributing to food security, economic prosperity, and employment opportunities.

During the forum, the Ministry showcased its engagement in the EU-Gambia Sustainable Fishing Partnership Agreement. This project underscores the Ministry’s commitment to supporting fisheries management measures, bolstering scientific and research capacities, and conserving fragile ecosystems. The initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable fisheries practices and the preservation of marine biodiversity.

The ministry reported substantial progress in registering and marking artisanal fishing vessels, a move aimed at combating illegal fishing and ensuring the traceability of fishery products. This effort is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable aquaculture development and alleviate pressure on capture fisheries, thereby fostering a more resilient fishing industry.

In its quest to improve public health and hygiene, the Ministry identified key public areas such as schools, markets, and health centers for the construction of public latrines. Additionally, the Ministry revealed plans to install 55 solar-powered water supply systems across the four provincial and West Coast regions. This initiative, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, marks a substantial advancement in water accessibility for Gambian communities.

President Barrow expressed his satisfaction with the ministry activities, noting the positive strides made in fisheries and water resource management. However, he also voiced concerns over project delays in some communities, urging the ministry to intensify efforts in social projects. President Barrow called for expedited testing of the newly constructed boats to create substantial employment opportunities for women and youth, thereby driving income growth.

The forum was attended by key government officials, including the Ministers for Finance and Economic Affairs, Public Service, the Chief of Staff Office of the President, and other senior executives. Their presence underscored the importance of the Ministry’s initiatives and the collective commitment to fostering sustainable development in The Gambia.
