Gambia: Police arrest ex-Brigadier General Bora
The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has arrested ex-Brigadier General Bora Colley, a former senior officer linked to the notorious ‘Junglers’.
The arrest followed his voluntary surrender late Friday night, August 9, 2024.
This arrest marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing quest for accountability related to past human rights violations during the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.
Colley, who fled The Gambia after Jammeh’s exile to Equatorial Guinea in January 2017, returned to the country under circumstances that remain unclear. His surrender took place at the GAF Military Police station located in Yundum Barracks, around midnight, where he is now being held for questioning.
Prior to Colley’s surrender, GAF intelligence operatives had been actively monitoring his movements in the Greater Banjul Area, acting on credible information regarding his presence in the country.
The circumstances surrounding his return and how long he has been residing in The Gambia are currently under investigation, with the military police indicating that more details will be disclosed to the public in due course.
This arrest is a crucial step towards addressing the legacy of Jammeh’s rule and the actions of the ‘Junglers’, a group notorious for their involvement in human rights abuses. The GAF has assured the public that they are committed to transparency and will provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
Colonel Lamin K. Sanyang, the Director of Press & Public Relations for the Gambia Armed Forces, emphasized the importance of this development in their ongoing efforts to uphold justice and restore public trust in the military institution.
