Rwandan referee Jean de Dieu Mukundiyukuri makes olympic history in Beach volleyball semi-finals
On Thursday, August 8, Jean de Dieu Mukundiyukuri etched his name in the annals of Olympic history by becoming the first African to officiate a beach volleyball semi-final at the prestigious games.
The 35-year-old Rwandan referee took charge of the thrilling match between Canada and Switzerland at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics.
Mukundiyukuri’s journey to this historic milestone has been marked by dedication and excellence.
An international beach volleyball referee since 2013, he holds the distinguished “Elite A” qualification, a status shared by only 24 referees globally. His impressive resume includes officiating at high-profile events such as the Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 in September last year and the Beach Volleyball World Cup in Mexico in October.
Before his illustrious refereeing career, Mukundiyukuri was a passionate volleyball player. His love for the game ignited during his youth, as he participated in local mini-tournaments and school competitions.
He played alongside notable athletes like Flavien Ndamukunda and Pierre Marshal Kwizera at Saint-Joseph in Kabgayi.
Unfortunately, a knee injury curtailed his playing career, prompting Mukundiyukuri to pivot to coaching and eventually refereeing.
His deep understanding of the game, coupled with his experience as a former Secretary General of the Rwanda National Olympic Committee, has equipped him with the skills and perspective needed to excel in his current role.
Mukundiyukuri’s achievement is not just a personal triumph but a significant milestone for African representation in international sports officiating.
His groundbreaking presence in the Olympic semi-finals serves as an inspiration to aspiring referees and athletes across the continent, showcasing the heights that can be reached through perseverance and passion.
