Egypt strengthens ties with Somalia through military aid, cooperation
Egypt has delivered a shipment of military aid to the Somalia army in Mogadishu, reinforcing Somalia’s efforts to bolster security and combat terrorism. The aid, announced by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, aligns with the recent military cooperation protocol signed between the two nations.
The delivery highlights Egypt’s commitment to aiding Somalia in strengthening its national security, ensuring its sovereignty, and promoting stability and development. “This support reflects Egypt’s ongoing role in helping Somalia build its national capabilities to fulfill the aspirations of its people for security, stability, and development,” stated the ministry.
The military aid follows Egypt’s consistent backing of Somalia’s territorial integrity, particularly amid the ongoing tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. These tensions escalated after Ethiopia reached an agreement with Somaliland, granting leasing rights to a portion of the Red Sea coastline—a deal Somalia considers a violation of its sovereignty.

Egypt’s dedication to Somalia’s unity was further emphasized in August when the two countries signed a military cooperation pact during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Cairo.
In light of the current security challenges in Somaliland, Egypt has also issued an evacuation call to its citizens residing in the self-declared region, urging them to depart promptly via Hargeisa Airport. Despite the region’s unrest, Egypt’s proactive steps to safeguard its citizens and support Somalia’s security efforts underscore its broader commitment to regional stability.
