Morocco’s mountain communities continue rebuilding efforts one year after devastating earthquake

One year after the devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains, mountain communities like Amizmiz and Imi N’Tala are still rebuilding. The earthquake, which occurred on September 8, 2023, killed nearly 3,000 people and left thousands of homes in ruins.

While the process has been slow, some residents have started to rebuild their homes. Funds ranging from €8,000 to €16,000 were distributed in instalments, allowing families like that of Abderrahim Alachoun to make progress on their homes. However, delays in bureaucracy have caused some frustration.

In areas like Imi N’Tala, where the destruction was worse, authorities have discouraged rebuilding due to safety concerns from potential falling rocks. Temporary tin homes were offered, but many residents, deeply connected to their land, prefer to stay in tents, refusing to leave their agricultural livelihoods.

In Tinmel, efforts have also resumed to restore the historic Tinmel Mosque, a symbol of cultural and religious heritage. Residents nearby are opting for modern construction techniques to better withstand future earthquakes.

The Moroccan government has reported the completion or repair of nearly 1,000 homes, with ongoing support for families. However, for many, the journey to full recovery remains far from over. Despite the challenges, there is hope that the community will rebuild and thrive once again.
