Opposition parties unite ahead of Senegal’s legislative elections
In Senegal’s legislative elections 40 Opposition parties have joined forces to form the “Bloc of Liberals and Democrats” (BLD) – Takku (“unite” in Wolof), just two months ahead of the country’s early legislative elections on November 17. The alliance, which includes major players like the Alliance for the Republic (APR) of former President Macky Sall and Rewmi, led by former Prime Minister Idrissa Seck, aims to create a unified front to challenge the government.
With only a few days left for parties to submit their candidate lists for validation, the formation of the BLD-Takku is seen as a significant step toward electoral collaboration. Although the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), led by Karim Wade, chose not to join the coalition, the new alliance remains strong and focused on uniting opposition forces.

Modou Diagne Fada, a former minister and one of the coalition’s key architects, emphasized that this partnership, initially based on ideological alignment, is set to evolve into a formal electoral bloc. As Senegal prepares for potential legislative elections, the BLD-Takku stands as a symbol of the opposition’s commitment to fostering change through unity and collaboration.
