Mali marks 64th independence with focus on unity, security achievements

Mali celebrated its 64th independence anniversary on Sunday, September 22, with events held across the nation, including the capital, Bamako. The country’s transitional president, Col. Assimi Goïta, addressed the nation, emphasizing unity, national sovereignty, and progress in the fight against terrorism.

In his speech, delivered Saturday night, Goïta highlighted key security achievements, particularly the “progressive return of basic public services and key infrastructures” in the cities of Ber, Tessalit, Anéfis, Kidal, and Aguelhok. He credited these successes to the Malian military’s stabilization operations, marking an important milestone in the fight against Islamist terrorist groups and separatist forces.

Goïta also honored the victims of the recent September 17 terrorist attacks in Bamako, offering condolences and a call for continued vigilance. “These attacks remind us of the urgent need to remain vigilant and maintain an exemplary operational posture in all circumstances,” he stated. While no official death toll has been released, security officials confirmed casualties among gendarme students and defense forces.

The Malian leader also turned his attention to the country’s economic challenges. Acknowledging the impact of prolonged security crises, he noted the strain on the nation’s budget but reassured citizens that inflation remains below the regional standard of 3%. Efforts to support local governments and agricultural sectors were highlighted, including an increased budget for local administrations and a general agricultural census aimed at modernizing Mali’s farming practices.

Energy poverty, a pressing issue in Mali, is also being addressed with plans for multiple solar power plants to enhance electricity access. In education, Goïta shared progress on universities in Sikasso, Kayes, Gao, Tombouctou, and Badiagara, signaling a focus on rebuilding key institutions.

In closing, Goïta reaffirmed his government’s commitment to national sovereignty and unity, calling on Malians to work toward peaceful, successful elections as the country continues its journey toward long-term stability and prosperity.
