Renowned Nigerian Poet to receive Golden Key of Smederevo at Serbian poetry festival
Celebrated Nigerian poet, Professor Niyi Osundare, has been named the recipient of the 2024 “Golden Key of Smederevo” award, marking another milestone in his illustrious literary career. The prestigious honor will be presented during the 56th International Poetry Festival “Smederevo Poets Autumn,” set to take place from October 15 to 17, 2024, in Smederevo, Serbia.
The festival, renowned for its commitment to preserving and promoting poetry, has been a gathering point for over 2,000 poets worldwide since its inception in 1970. Each year, the “Golden Key of Smederevo” is awarded to a distinguished poet whose work exemplifies literary excellence and cultural impact. The award includes a gilded replica of the city’s key, the publication of a bilingual poetry book in both the poet’s language and Serbian, as well as a monetary prize of €1,000.
The decision to honor Osundare was made by the festival’s Awards Committee at a meeting held on July 15, 2024. In a statement, the committee praised Osundare as “one of the most prominent African poets, scholars, and intellectuals.” His work, spanning over twenty poetry collections, numerous plays, and academic writings, has been widely translated and recognized across the globe.
Professor Osundare, born in Ikere-Ekiti, Nigeria, draws heavily from his African heritage, particularly the rich oral traditions of the Yoruba culture, which influence his powerful poetic expressions. His deep connection to his roots, combined with his global perspective, has earned him numerous accolades, including the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa and the Nigerian National Order of Merit.
Reflecting on the award, Osundare said, “Poetry has always been a medium for telling the human story, for crossing borders and creating connections.” His works, such as the acclaimed “I Sing of Change,” explore both African and global human experiences. His unique style often critiques contemporary global movements such as postmodernism and posthumanism, offering a voice for the marginalized while advocating for a more humane world.
The Awards Committee, which included notable literary scholars like Prof. Dr. Milena Vladić Jovanov and Prof. Dr. Boško Suvajdžić, highlighted Osundare’s ability to “bridge the seas with verses” through his work, making African stories resonate across the world. His poetry reflects a blend of cultural richness and intellectual depth, as he continues to uphold Africa at the core of his creative imagination.
Miljan Guberinić, the director of the International Poetry Festival, expressed excitement about Osundare’s participation, stating, “This is a unique opportunity to celebrate the legacy of African poetry and its impact on the global literary scene. We are honored to host Professor Niyi Osundare, whose work transcends borders and speaks to the human condition.” The festival has requested that Osundare record a reading of three of his poems for promotion on social media platforms.
Arrangements for his travel and accommodation are underway as Serbia prepares to welcome one of Nigeria’s most respected literary figures. Osundare’s involvement is expected to enhance the festival’s reputation for promoting international dialogue and diversity through poetry.
The “Golden Key of Smederevo” is another accolade that adds to Osundare’s long list of honors, including the Fonlon/Nichols Award and numerous international recognitions.
His work has been a bridge between continents, echoing Africa’s voice while engaging with universal themes of justice, humanity, and freedom.
