Gambia, Nigeria unite for cultural diplomacy through music, others
The vibrant cultural ties between Gambia, known as the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” and Nigeria, the “Giant of Africa,” were celebrated recently at the International Diplomacy and Diversity on Food, Drinks, Music, Culture, Arts, Fashion, and Dance fiesta.
The event, organized by Lagos SWAN (Sports Writers Association of Nigeria) and AIPS (International Sports Press Association), took place at the Goldview Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.
Held in collaboration with the Gambian presidency, UNESCO, and other notable organizations, the annual event aims to preserve and promote African cultural heritage. Ambassador Olatutu Oladunni, the first female chairperson of Lagos SWAN and Head of Foreign Relations for the Pan African American Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of cultural preservation.

“Partnerships like this enhance artistic innovation, foster cultural sustainability, and boost the creative economy in meaningful ways,” she said.
Highlights included the presentation of Global Diplomatic Cultural Awards to distinguished individuals, including the Gambian High Commissioner to Nigeria, HE Amb. Mohamadou Musa Njie; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; and Dr. Gabriel Olowo of SABRE West/Central Africa. A posthumous honor was also awarded to Yeni Kuti, the first daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Ambassador Njie captivated the audience with his keynote speech, sharing his approach to embracing Nigeria’s cultural diversity by wearing Yoruba attire on Mondays, Igbo on Tuesdays, Hausa on Wednesdays, and Gambian attire later in the week. “Africa’s rich cultural diversity has the power to drive trade and tourism,” he remarked, underscoring the event’s importance in promoting unity through culture.
The event’s success, supported by partners like Indomie Noodles, NBC, and the National Council for Arts and Culture, underscores the potential of cultural diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding and economic growth.
