Zimbabwe secures AFCON 2025 spot with hard-fought draw against Kenya
Zimbabwe has officially qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after securing a 1-1 draw with Kenya at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday evening.
The match saw Tawanda Maswanhise open the scoring for the Warriors in the 32nd minute with a brilliant strike inside the penalty box. The Motherwell FC forward displayed exceptional skill to give Zimbabwe the lead, heading into the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage.
Kenya came out strong in the second half, leveling the score in the 52nd minute thanks to Jonah Ayunga’s successful effort. The Harambee Stars pressed hard for a winning goal, but Zimbabwe’s defense remained resolute, ensuring the game ended in a draw.
With this result, Zimbabwe mathematically secured their spot in the upcoming AFCON tournament, much to the joy of their supporters.
Despite the pressure from Kenya, the Warriors held firm, confirming their place at the prestigious continental competition in Morocco next year.
