Gambia: Mayor Malick-Lowe nominated to UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality

The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick-Lowe, has announced her nomination to serve as a member of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Standing Committee on Gender Equality. This prestigious committee is globally recognized as the voice of locally elected women, supported by national governments and the United Nations. It plays a crucial role in advocating for gender equality, feminist municipal leadership, and the UCLG Women Facility worldwide.

In her announcement, Mayor Malick-Lowe expressed her honor at the nomination, emphasizing the significance of the committee’s mandate. “It is my honor and privilege to announce that I am nominated to serve as a member of The UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality,” she wrote. “The Committee has been repeatedly acknowledged as the global voice of the locally elected women by national governments and the United Nations as the main body promoting gender equality, feminist municipal leadership and the motor behind the UCLG Women Facility in the world.”


The Committee is led by Fatimetou Abdel Malick, President of the Nouakchott Region, who also serves as the President of the United Cities of Local Government Africa (UCLGA). The committee comprises representatives from each of the UCLG world sections, with a mandate to advance the participation of women in governance, monitor gender equality, and drive the global Feminist Municipal Movement.

The committee’s key objectives include:

1. Promoting and ensuring the active participation of women in all forms of governance and decision-making processes, including in UCLG Policy Councils.

2. Holding the UCLG World Organization accountable for gender equality through advocacy, knowledge creation, and the implementation of the All UCLG Gender Equality Strategy.

3. Amplifying the global Feminist Municipal Movement, centered on equality, solidarity, and participation.

4. Ensuring that global agendas align with local priorities and realities, effectively localizing global policies.

 

In her message, Mayor Malick-Lowe also expressed gratitude to the people of Banjul and the wider Gambian community. “Congratulations to all the nominees and a big thank you to the people of Banjul, by extension The Gambia am grateful,” she concluded.

Her appointment marks a significant milestone for The Gambia as the country continues to play an active role in promoting gender equality on the global stage.
