President Barrow Appoints New Foreign Minister

His Excellency President Adama Barrow has appointed Honourable Sering Modou Njie as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad.

The decision takes immediate effect and is in line with the powers vested in the President under Sections 71 (1) and 71 (3) of the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia.

Until his reassignment, Honourable Njie served as the Minister for Defence. He now replaces the outgoing foreign affairs minister as part of President Barrow’s effort to re-energize his cabinet and strengthen Gambia’s diplomatic engagements.

A native of Medina Sering Mass, Honourable Njie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in International Relations.

His career began in 1998 with the Gambia Armed Forces, where he served as the Public Relations Officer. He steadily rose through the ranks to become Head of the Republic National Guard in 2011.

Njie later transitioned to the diplomatic corps, where he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Gambia High Commission in New Delhi, India.

He also held various diplomatic postings at the Gambia Embassy in Turkey before returning home to take up the Defence portfolio in 2022.

In a related development, President Barrow has assigned Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow to temporarily oversee the Ministry of Defence, ensuring continuity in national security administration.

This cabinet adjustment reflects President Barrow’s ongoing commitment to efficient governance, regional cooperation, and effective representation of Gambian interests abroad.
