Ruto praises Kenyan police force on visit to Haiti
Kenya’s President William Ruto arrived in Haiti on Saturday, highlighting the positive impact of the Kenyan police force in combating gang violence and improving security in the nation. Ruto commended the efforts of the Kenyan forces, stating that their presence has led to significant enhancements in the country’s security infrastructure, enabling displaced Haitians to return to their homes.
Upon his arrival, Ruto walked past armed officers on a red carpet and visited a Kenyan base at the airport. There, he engaged with police officers dedicated to fighting gangs and met with high-ranking officials from Haiti and Canada. The president expressed optimism about the progress made by Kenyan forces since their deployment in June, noting that their efforts have contributed to a safer environment for the Haitian people.
While acknowledging the ongoing challenges, Ruto emphasized the importance of international cooperation in restoring stability to Haiti, which has faced escalating violence and political turmoil since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. The president expressed his intention to listen to the experiences of the Kenyan forces deployed in Haiti, as he prepares to meet with U.N. leaders in New York.

Kenya was the first nation to send police forces as part of a broader U.N. initiative aimed at supporting Haiti. Currently, approximately 400 Kenyan police are working on the ground, with additional support from about two dozen Jamaican police and soldiers who arrived earlier this month. Ruto’s visit underscores Kenya’s commitment to aiding Haiti during this critical time, fostering hope for a more secure and peaceful future.
