Following a series of attacks in Beirut involving exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, residents of Lebanon’s capital are adopting proactive safety measures to protect themselves and their devices. Despite the unsettling incidents, which resulted in casualties and widespread concern, telecom experts and local business owners are reassuring the public about device safety and providing guidance on precautionary steps.

Nabil Balaa, a telecommunications engineer, highlighted the positive shift in public awareness around personal electronic safety. “I received numerous calls from customers asking how to hide their devices and what precautions to take,” Balaa said, adding that while most market devices are safe, certain compromised products may pose risks. He noted that citizens are taking steps to ensure their safety and better understand the technology they use daily.

Although sales of mobile phones have been impacted in some areas, particularly in stores like Samah Almasri’s on Hamra high street, Almasri remains optimistic that business will recover. “Everyone is now throwing their phones out of their hands; they feel like all phones are being monitored,” she said, but also emphasized that open dialogue with customers about security has helped calm anxieties.

The attacks, which reportedly targeted Hezbollah but also harmed civilians, have raised tensions in the region. However, the public’s response demonstrates resilience as they focus on practical steps to safeguard themselves, with experts offering guidance on maintaining the safe use of personal devices.

While the situation remains tense, efforts by local businesses and tech professionals to provide safety advice underscore a commitment to helping residents adapt to the changing security landscape.
