The U.N. General Assembly has approves far-reaching “Pact for the Future,” aimed at uniting the world’s nations to address critical 21st-century global challenges. The 42-page document calls on the 193 member nations to take decisive action on issues ranging from climate change and artificial intelligence to poverty, inequality, and escalating global conflicts.

The pact, introduced at the opening of the two-day “Summit of the Future,” convened by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, outlines 56 specific actions to tackle these pressing concerns. Guterres emphasized the need to bring multilateral cooperation “back from the brink,” urging global leaders to turn promises into tangible results that improve the lives of over 8 billion people worldwide.

Key provisions include commitments to eradicate poverty, address climate change, achieve gender equality, and reform the U.N. Security Council. This includes ensuring greater representation for Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The blueprint also features the first multilateral support for nuclear disarmament in over a decade and steps to prevent an arms race in outer space.

Other groundbreaking commitments include measures to respond to pandemics and a promise to engage young people in decision-making processes. Additionally, the pact champions the removal of barriers that prevent women and girls from achieving their full potential.

Guterres concluded, “We have opened the door. It is now up to all of us to step through it… I challenge you to take action.”
