Sudan’s journalists rally to rebuild media sector as war devastation sparks renewed efforts
Despite the destruction of 90% of Sudan’s media infrastructure and the displacement of around a thousand journalists due to ongoing conflict, journalists and media professionals are coming together to rebuild the country’s press. At a recent conference in Cairo, hosted by the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate (SJS), more than 300 participants, both in-person and virtual, discussed ways to restore the media’s role in fostering peace and democracy.
Eman Fadul, SJS Secretary of Freedoms, highlighted the need to overcome challenges like internet blackouts and misinformation while calling for laws to protect journalists and ensure media independence. Several participants emphasized the role of journalism in combating hate speech and promoting unity in Sudan.
