ECOWAS ministers convene for 52nd session to address regional peace, security

In a pivotal gathering aimed at addressing pressing security challenges and fostering peace across West Africa, the 52nd Regular Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council convened at the ministerial level.

This significant meeting, part of the ECOWAS statutory framework, brought together key ministers and representatives from member states, underscoring the region’s collective commitment to stability and cooperation.


Presiding over the session was His Excellency Sir Yusuf Maitama TUGGAR, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY, Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission. The high-level assembly saw the participation of Foreign Affairs and Security Ministers, ECOWAS Vice-President, Commissioners, and expert delegates from member states, all converging to deliberate on urgent security matters and strategies to promote peace in the region.

In his opening remarks, Sir Yusuf Maitama TUGGAR emphasized the critical nature of the discussions, highlighting the importance of a unified approach in tackling regional security threats. Dr. Omar Alieu TOURAY echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for collaborative efforts to ensure sustainable peace and stability.

The session’s agenda covered a broad spectrum of security issues, from counter-terrorism initiatives to humanitarian responses and conflict resolution mechanisms. The ministers and experts engaged in comprehensive dialogues, sharing insights and best practices to enhance the region’s security architecture.
