Cape Verde hosts launch of ECOWAS cross-border cooperation platform
In a significant move towards fostering regional integration and collaboration, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) launched the National Platform for the ECOWAS Cross-Border Cooperation Support Programme 2023-2027. The event, held in the picturesque Beach City of Cape Verde, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties among member states.
The launch was officiated by Mr. Albert Siaw-Boateng, Director of Free Movement of People and Migration, representing the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, His Excellency Massandje Toure-Litse. Delivering warm greetings from the Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Mr. Siaw-Boateng emphasized the inclusive nature of the program, underscoring its benefits for all member states.
“ECOWAS’ Cross-Border Cooperation support programme is not for some Member States, but it is for all Member States,” stated Mr. Siaw-Boateng. He highlighted the program’s history, noting its inception in 2006 and its expansion to include Cape Verde, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in the latest phase. Initially, nine countries—Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo—participated, each receiving grants to implement locally identified projects.
Mr. Siaw-Boateng revealed that each of the newly included nations would similarly receive $100,000 to support their projects. He reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to monitoring and supporting these initiatives to ensure tangible benefits for the community’s citizens, aligning with the organization’s vision of transforming from an ECOWAS of States to an ECOWAS for people.
The launch brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the National Directorate of Immigration, various ministries such as Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Finance, Internal Administration, Agriculture and Environment, and Territorial Cohesion, as well as the platform of Civil Society Organizations.
Dr. Isa Morais, Coordinator of the ECOWAS National Unit, stressed the event’s significance for regional integration and cooperation. She pointed out that for Small Island Developing States like Cape Verde, the platform serves not only as a cooperative tool but also as a symbol of collective commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity. Dr. Morais outlined Cape Verde’s project, “Reinforcement of Opportunities and Promotion of Integration,” aimed at improving the lives of ECOWAS nationals residing in Cape Verde.
Dr. Morais emphasized the platform’s role in equipping Cape Verde to identify impactful projects, adapt to emerging needs, and engage various sectors to ensure inclusivity and sustainability. She expressed gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission and highlighted the importance of strategic collaboration among stakeholders.
As the event concluded, the sentiment was clear: this meeting was not just about discussions but about crafting practical solutions with a profound impact on the lives of the community’s citizens.
