Gambia: Taxi driver arrested as ringleader in violent robbery
On June 16, 2024, police apprehended 22-year-old taxi driver Abubacarr Touray from Faji Kunda, identifying him as the prime suspect in a violent robbery that shocked the community.
Touray, along with his alleged accomplices Ebrima Konateh, Ebrima Sarr, Demba Jarju, and Edi Boy, is accused of orchestrating and executing a brutal ambush that left the victim traumatized and robbed of valuables.
The incident occurred during what was supposed to be a routine five-day taxi hire service, for which the victim paid D10,000. Instead, the victim was led into a trap set by Touray and his accomplices between Ndemban Clinic and Sting Corner.
Armed with knives, cutlasses, and pepper spray, the assailants attacked the victim, stealing D4,000 in cash, a mobile phone, D7,000, and a PlayStation gaming console.
While five of the six suspects have been detained, one remains at large. The police are actively pursuing the remaining suspect and urge anyone with information to come forward.
This alarming incident has prompted authorities to remind the public to remain vigilant, particularly during festive periods, and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
