Kenyan government enhances safety measures in schools after tragic fire

The Kenyan government is taking swift action to improve safety in boarding schools after a tragic fire at Hillside Endarasha Primary School in Nyeri claimed the lives of at least 21 students. DNA testing is set to begin on Monday to identify the victims, with government officials and pathologist Johansen Oduor assuring families that every effort will be made to bring closure. Though the process is expected to take several days, the authorities are committed to providing answers.

The fire, which broke out late Thursday night in a dormitory housing 156 boys aged 10 to 14, saw over 100 students safely accounted for. Efforts to trace the 17 missing children are ongoing, with the government urging anyone who rescued students to return them to the school to aid in the search.

In the wake of the tragedy, President William Ruto has declared a three-day national mourning period starting Monday, reflecting the nation’s unity and resolve during this difficult time.

The quick response minimized injuries, and the blaze was contained before causing further damage.
