23 dead, 40 rescued after boat capsizes on DRC’s Lake Kivu, survivors highlight swift response
Tragedy struck on Lake Kivu near Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC’s) as an overloaded boat capsized, leaving at least 23 dead. However, swift action from local authorities and rescue teams saved 40 passengers.
The vessel, carrying people from Minova in South Kivu province, overturned about 100 meters from the shore near the Kitutu port. While initial reports registered 80 passengers, witnesses estimate close to 200 people were on board.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) played a critical role in the rescue efforts, working alongside local security forces to pull survivors from the water. Despite the tragedy, many lauded the rapid response, which prevented further loss of life.

Overloaded vessels and lax maritime regulations are frequent causes of such incidents in the region. Yet, this operation demonstrated that when coordinated efforts are in place, lives can be saved even in the face of danger.
Many passengers had chosen the water route to avoid the perilous overland journey due to ongoing conflicts between the DRC government and the M23 rebel movement.
