Ghana reports first mpox case of the year, health authorities take swift action
Ghana has reported its first case of mpox in 2024, and the country’s health service is taking swift measures to prevent further spread. According to an official statement, the patient, a young male, exhibited symptoms including fever, rash, and body pains. In response, authorities have identified 25 contacts who are being closely monitored.
Although the exact variant of the virus has yet to be determined, testing is underway to confirm whether it is the clade Ib strain, which has raised global concern due to its rapid transmission. Ghana previously dealt with mpox outbreaks in 2022 and 2023 and has since strengthened its public health infrastructure.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had declared mpox a global public health emergency earlier this year after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighboring countries. Ghana’s quick response reflects its commitment to mitigating the impact of the virus while ensuring public safety.
