ECOWAS Chairman emphasizes democracy, integration at ARCAN event
The Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) recently hosted its annual lecture for 2024, drawing attention to the vital themes of democracy and integration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Held on October 8 at the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the event was graced by distinguished attendees, including accredited ambassadors, former plenipotentiary ambassadors, and university students.
Presiding over the ceremony, His Excellency Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored the pivotal role that ECOWAS plays in fostering regional integration and democratic governance among its member states. He stated, “ECOWAS serves as a cornerstone for unity and cooperation in West Africa, essential for our collective progress.”
The highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by His Excellency Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission. In a comprehensive speech that lasted over an hour, President Touray reflected on the foundational vision of ECOWAS’s founders and celebrated the significant strides made in integration, peace, security, and governance.
