Senegal Elhadj As Sy appointed as Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s first chancellor
Elhadj As Sy, a globally recognized humanitarian leader, has been named the inaugural Chancellor of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), marking a historic milestone for the institution.
As Sy, known for his commitment to global health and humanitarian work, will be officially installed at a ceremony later this year.
Currently serving as Chair of the Board of the Kofi Annan Foundation and former Secretary General of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, As Sy brings decades of experience in global health and development. His leadership extends to past roles at UNICEF, the United Nations, and the Global Fund.
Upon accepting the position, As Sy emphasized the urgency of addressing neglected tropical diseases, stating, “LSTM responds to the critical need for education and research aimed at saving lives and alleviating suffering among the most vulnerable populations, and I am deeply honored to serve in this capacity.”

LSTM’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Lalloo, expressed his excitement about the appointment, noting that As Sy’s extensive experience and commitment to humanitarian causes align perfectly with the institution’s mission. “As Sy will help drive LSTM’s future, promoting equitable partnerships and making a meaningful impact in global health,” Lalloo said.
As Sy’s installation will take place during LSTM’s Class of 2024 graduation ceremony at St George’s Hall, Liverpool, on December 9, 2024. His role as Chancellor replaces the former position of President, last held by Sir Richard Evans CBE, who retired earlier this year.
Jim McKenna, Chair of LSTM’s Board of Trustees, acknowledged Sir Richard’s valuable contributions while looking forward to the institution’s future under As Sy’s leadership.
