Community rallies to prevent tanker disasters after tragic explosion in Nigeria

Residents of Majia, a town in northern Nigeria, are uniting in grief and determination after a devastating fuel tanker explosion claimed over 170 lives earlier this week.

The tragedy, which took place when locals attempted to scoop fuel from an overturned tanker, has ignited calls for stronger safety measures and public awareness.

Despite the heavy loss, community members are taking proactive steps to prevent future disasters.

Leading the effort is Mustapha Majiya, who lost two nephews in the explosion while they were trying to warn others of the dangers. “My nephews, Nuradeen Rabiu, 16, and Dini Babalo, 17, were among those killed. They tried to stop people from getting too close to the tanker and scooping fuel before the explosion,” Majiya told the BBC.

Safety experts have also joined the conversation, advocating for better infrastructure and stricter regulations on fuel transportation.

“There is no political will to act,” said Timothy Iwuagwu, president of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, emphasizing the need for better-maintained roads and stricter safety checks on fuel tankers.

As the local government pledges support for survivors and a nationwide push for increased safety awareness gains momentum, these efforts aim to prevent future tragedies and protect Nigerian communities.
