MPs discuss environmental, regional integration concerns at EALA, propose key legislation

Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) have expressed their concerns about environmental issues and regional integration, with some calling for stricter policies to address the growing plastic problem and other regional challenges.

Jacqueline Amongin, a Ugandan MP, urged for a bill targeting single-use plastics, highlighting the urgent need to combat environmental pollution, following Rwanda’s example of a nationwide plastic ban. Amongin also proposed a petition to fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) in East Africa.

“The EAC is built on four pillars, but some are being compromised, such as climate change. Landslides recently displaced people in Bududa. We need an action plan to address these challenges–Jacqueline Amongin, MP”

Meanwhile, EALA MP David Ole Sankok emphasized the successes of the East African Community (EAC) in easing movement across member states, allowing citizens to travel using just their National Identity Cards. However, he stressed that the establishment of a common East African currency still needs to be achieved.

Amongin added that environmental degradation, such as recent landslides in Bududa, Uganda, is a critical issue, calling for a more robust climate action plan within the EAC.

The discussions underscore the ongoing efforts by EALA to strengthen regional cooperation and tackle pressing issues in the country.
