Minister Kyofatogabye urges action on Kiteezi waste crisis, calls for accountability

Minister Kyofatogabye has raised concerns about the management of the Kiteezi garbage site, questioning the decision to select the Ghana-based Jospong Group of Companies for waste recycling.

Speaking on Morning at NTV, the minister revealed that he had been assigned the task of finding a suitable company for the job and successfully did so.

Minister Kyofatogabye expressed disappointment over the lack of action taken following his warnings in November last year regarding the potential disaster at Kiteezi. He emphasized the need for urgent measures to prevent a recurring garbage crisis, underscoring that this issue was avoidable.

In a strong statement, the minister also held the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, accountable for the ongoing crisis, highlighting Lukwago’s long tenure at KCCA. “Having been in KCCA for 15 years, he has only engaged in conflicts,” Kyofatogabye remarked, suggesting that the mayor should have resigned if he had any respect left.

Kyofatogabye further mentioned that this financial year, 2 billion shillings had been allocated for constructing a wall fence around the Kiteezi site, but the funds were instead used for publicity by KCCA.

“I am willing to sacrifice myself to ensure that Lukwago leaves KCCA,” the minister stated, expressing his commitment to seeing better leadership and improved waste management in Kampala.

The minister’s call for accountability is seen as a crucial step towards addressing Kampala’s garbage problem, ensuring that both leadership and waste management strategies align for the benefit of the city’s residents.
