Residents escape tragedy as seven-story building collapses in Nairobi, Kenya

Residents of a seven-story apartment building in Nairobi’s Kahawa West narrowly avoided disaster when the structure collapsed.

Thankfully, the majority had evacuated the building after receiving a notice from the County Planning Department last week.

Although the collapse left the building reduced to rubble, swift action by emergency services led to the rescue of two people, who were taken to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital. Rescue efforts are still ongoing to ensure no one remains trapped.

Two adjacent buildings also showed signs of structural failure, and their residents were safely evacuated.

The National Construction Authority had previously ordered the building’s owner to provide a structural integrity report, but the collapse occurred before this was done.
