Fuel truck accident near Ugandan capital claims lives
A fuel truck lost control and exploded near Kampala on Tuesday, tragically killing at least 10 people. Despite the disaster, swift action from firefighters and emergency responders helped prevent further damage.
Charles Lwanga, the resident district commissioner for the area, stated, “The fuel tanker lost control and overturned. This is a busy area, and people nearby came to siphon fuel from the tanker, but it exploded, killing at least 10 people and injuring several others.”
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango added, “A multi-agency response team swiftly responded, and the fire prevention service from the police has controlled the fire.”
The incident took place in the town of Kigogwa, 15 miles north of the capital, but authorities successfully contained the flames, preventing them from reaching a nearby petrol station. Lwanga confirmed, “Ambulances rushed to the scene to take the injured to the hospital, and firefighters have prevented further tragedy.” Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.
