ECOWAS urged to strengthen collective action against regional security challenges

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria and Chair of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, His Excellency Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has called for collective action and stronger regional cooperation to address the numerous security threats facing West Africa.

His call came during the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Council, held on December 11, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria.


In his opening remarks, H.E. Tuggar praised the ongoing efforts by ECOWAS Member States and the ECOWAS Commission in tackling issues such as terrorism, violent extremism, organized crime, and natural disasters.

“We must make constructive recommendations to better address the challenges of peace and security in the ECOWAS region,” he urged.

He emphasized that these challenges are shared burdens and require a united front. “The significant efforts made so far are commendable, but we must strengthen our regional cooperation to safeguard the security and stability of our region.”

The session brought together representatives from across the region to strategize on improving security responses and maintaining peace. H.E. Tuggar’s message underscored the urgency of collaboration in the face of escalating threats, reaffirming ECOWAS’s commitment to fostering a safer and more stable West Africa.
