ECOWAS, UN forge stronger ties on political cooperation, security, human development

In a landmark meeting held on January 10, 2025, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, hosted the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, H.E. Amina Mohammed, to discuss strategies for enhancing bilateral relations.

The discussions focused on bolstering collaboration in critical areas, including political cooperation, peace and security, trade liberalization, education, regional integration, and human development. Both leaders emphasized the importance of unified efforts to address pressing challenges in the region.


Speaking on the meeting’s outcomes, H.E. Touray stated, “This engagement underscores the shared commitment of ECOWAS and the United Nations to advancing sustainable development and fostering a peaceful and prosperous West Africa.”

Echoing his sentiments, H.E. Amina Mohammed highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying, “The United Nations remains steadfast in its support for ECOWAS. Together, we can tackle the region’s socio-economic and security challenges, ensuring no one is left behind.”

The meeting reaffirmed the pivotal role of regional and international cooperation in achieving long-term stability and development in West Africa.

Both entities pledged to deepen their collaboration to address emerging issues and build a resilient future for the region.
