ECOWAS, UK Royal College of Defence Studies Hold Strategic Talks on Peacebuilding and Security Collaboration

“We are keen to deepen strategic alliances and strengthen frameworks for regional peacekeeping,” says ECOWAS official

In a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at enhancing regional peace and security, the ECOWAS Commission, through its Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), hosted a 21-member delegation from the United Kingdom’s Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) on May 12, 2025, in Abuja. The visit formed part of the RCDS’s overseas strategic study tour.

The dialogue session focused on deepening strategic alliances, enhancing peacebuilding initiatives, and re-evaluating current frameworks supporting regional peacekeeping efforts. The discussions underscored the need for continued collaboration in addressing emerging security challenges in West Africa.

Led by Rear Admiral Steve Dainton, the RCDS delegation engaged with ECOWAS representatives on a broad range of topics central to the region’s stability. Mr. Bekaye Coulibaly of the Directorate of Peace-keeping and Regional Security (DPKRS) led the ECOWAS delegation and moderated the session on behalf of the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.

Coulibaly also delivered a comprehensive presentation on ECOWAS interventions in peacekeeping and mediation across West Africa. “We are keen to deepen strategic alliances and strengthen frameworks for regional peacekeeping,” he stated during the briefing.

The session provided both parties with a platform to share experiences and insights on defense, diplomacy, and multilateral cooperation in conflict-prone regions.

Rear Admiral Dainton commended ECOWAS for its leadership role in maintaining peace and stability in West Africa. “This engagement provides invaluable insights into the regional approaches to peace and security,” he noted.

The visit marks another step in the growing cooperation between ECOWAS and international partners in fostering sustainable peace and collective security mechanisms.
