Gov Zulum’s Convoy Security Clashes with Boko Haram in Fierce Gunfight After Gomboru Tour

Security personnel escorting the convoy of Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, were involved in a fierce gun battle with Boko Haram insurgents on Monday while returning from a security assessment mission in Gomboru Ngala.
The confrontation occurred between 12:50 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., shortly after the convoy departed Wulgo, a border community where Governor Zulum had concluded a three-day tour to assess the aftermath of recent terrorist attacks.
According to a reliable source traveling with the convoy, the group came under sudden fire from suspected Boko Haram fighters. The attackers’ intentions were unclear, but security operatives, including military personnel, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, swiftly engaged the insurgents in a gunfight that lasted nearly 30 minutes.
> “There was panic among us when the gunfire erupted. Many feared it was an ambush, but our security men responded immediately and repelled the attackers,” the source stated.
It remains unconfirmed whether Governor Zulum was in the convoy at the time of the ambush. However, sources close to the administration say he had just finished a high-risk tour to reinforce confidence among residents and frontline communities under threat from insurgent activity.
Casualties were reported among the ranks of the CJTF and local hunters, though the number of injuries has yet to be officially disclosed. No fatalities have been confirmed as of the time of this report.
Security forces have since restored calm in the area, and no further threats have been reported along the route to Maiduguri. Authorities are expected to release an official statement detailing the incident and any subsequent security measures.
Governor Zulum, known for his bravery and hands-on leadership in Borno’s fight against terrorism, has repeatedly visited some of the most dangerous zones in the state, often at great personal risk.
This latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram in Borno, even as government forces continue efforts to stabilize the region.
