Barrow Inaugurates Engineering College, Celebrates First Batch of Gambia-Trained Engineers

In a landmark event marking a new era in Gambia’s higher education and technological advancement, President Adama Barrow on Saturday inaugurated the College of Science and Engineering (CoSE) building and presided over the maiden convocation ceremony of the University of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology (USET) in Brikama.
The ceremony was not only a celebration of infrastructure development but also a historic moment for the country’s education system, as twenty-eight (28) pioneering students graduated from the Departments of Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering—making them the first cohort of home-grown engineers trained entirely in The Gambia.
Addressing the audience, President Barrow expressed deep pride and optimism about the occasion.
“The occasion represents not only the overwhelming development of our tertiary education sector,” he said, “but also a new chapter in our ambition to transform The Gambia into a knowledge-driven, technologically empowered, and self-reliant nation.”
The event also featured the conferment of an honorary Doctor of Engineering and Technology (Honoris Causa) degree on President Barrow by USET.
The award recognized the President’s visionary leadership, infrastructure expansion efforts, and dedication to national development through education and innovation.
The citation described Barrow as a “true architect of national progress,” lauding his legacy of integrity, service, and long-term commitment to empowering future generations through science and technology.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, university administrators, families of graduates, and stakeholders in the education sector, all of whom celebrated the strides taken toward producing locally trained technical professionals to drive national development.
