Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump is set to host five African heads of state in Washington next week for high-level discussions focused on trade and commercial cooperation.
According to a White House official who briefed reporters on Wednesday, the meeting is scheduled for July 9 and will include a working lunch at the White House.
The African leaders expected are President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of Gabon, President Général Umaro El Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. of Liberia, and President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania.
“President Trump believes that African countries offer incredible commercial opportunities which benefit both the American people and our African partners,” the official stated, highlighting the economic focus of the upcoming engagement.
The Trump administration has previously reduced portions of U.S. foreign aid to African countries, citing a desire to eliminate what it described as “wasteful spending” inconsistent with Trump’s “America First” agenda.
In place of aid, the administration has emphasized fostering mutual prosperity through trade, investment, and commercial partnerships.
