ECOWAS Endorses Standby Force Training Policy to Bolster Regional Peace and Security

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has convened a High-Level Governmental Experts’ Validation Meeting in Abuja from July 16 to 17, 2025, to endorse a new Training Policy for Peace Support Operations.
The move is aimed at transforming the ECOWAS Standby Force into a mission-ready unit capable of rapid and coordinated responses to security threats across the region.
This two-day meeting gathers experts from ECOWAS Member States, relevant Commission directorates, and international partners, including the European Union, BMZ, GIZ, Expertise France, and AECID.
The newly endorsed policy provides a unified training framework for military, police, and civilian components, emphasizing human rights, gender inclusion, and conflict prevention.
Aligned with ECOWAS Vision 2050, the initiative reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to fostering a peaceful, secure, and resilient West Africa.
It also signals stronger coordination between regional security priorities and international peacebuilding efforts.
