Gambia Hosts 54th CPA Africa Conference on Strengthening Democratic Governance

The Republic of The Gambia has officially opened the 54th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Conference in Banjul, bringing together parliamentarians, parliamentary staff, and stakeholders from across the continent under the theme: “Strengthening Democratic Governance and Resilience in Africa: Tackling Conflicts, Economic Shocks, and Climate Risks.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, President Adama Barrow stressed the urgency of collaborative strategies to address Africa’s governance, economic, and environmental challenges.

“The theme of the conference resonates deeply with the aspirations and challenges of every African nation,” President Barrow said. “It invites and merits critical reflection on the intricate realities that define the present and may shape the future. It is a powerful call to collective action, urging us to confront our challenges with renewed vigour and determined commitment.”

The Gambian leader highlighted persistent conflicts, unconstitutional changes of government, economic vulnerabilities, and the devastating effects of climate change as key threats to stability and development across the continent.

“True development cannot thrive in the absence of mutual trust, hard work, peace, and stability,” he noted, adding that “the climate crisis is a lived reality for Africa… intensifying vulnerability, fuelling resource scarcity, triggering migration, and contributing to conflicts.”

President Barrow reiterated The Gambia’s commitment to democratic governance, parliamentary independence, and strengthening oversight institutions. He underscored the importance of building diversified economies, enhancing disaster preparedness, and fostering national cohesion through dialogue and community empowerment.

“The salvation of Africa lies in democratic governance, proper policies, and appropriate action, sustained by peace, stability, and security for all,” he declared, calling on delegates to engage in thoughtful dialogue, forge stronger partnerships, and commit to concrete actions.

The conference, which will run in Banjul, serves as a platform for African parliaments to share best practices and craft innovative solutions to the continent’s pressing challenges.
