Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies return victorious, coach calls for professionalism

Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies received a hero’s welcome as they touched down in South Africa after clinching the CAF Women’s Champions League title for the second time in three years.

Despite a more than an hour delay, the spirit of the supporters remained unwavering.

Coach Jerry Tshabalala expressed that the team’s success is a clear indicator that it’s time to professionalize women’s football in South Africa. He emphasized the need for players to focus solely on football without the burden of multiple jobs.

Tshabalala stated, “When you invest in women’s football, this is what you get. We’ve got talent in South Africa; let us invest in our women’s football.”

Club defender Lebohang Ramalepe revealed the team’s ambition to conquer the FIFA Club World Cup, marking their next target after securing the CAF Women’s Champions League title.

Amid the celebratory atmosphere, Mamelodi Sundowns supporters expressed their joy and dedication to the club’s achievements. The men’s team recently secured the African Football League title.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi called on football clubs in the country to invest in women’s football, emphasizing that the success of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies should serve as a signal to support and invest in the women’s game.

Football authorities and leaders echoed the sentiment, challenging other clubs to prioritize women’s football.

Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg praised the team’s achievement, highlighting the collective effort from the technical team, players, and staff.

The triumphant return of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies is not only a cause for celebration within the club but is also expected to uplift Banyana Banyana as they gear up for the 2024 CAF Women’s Olympic qualifiers in February.
