Death toll from floods in Kenya rises again

In the latest update on the devastating floods in Kenya, the death toll has risen to at least 20, with eight additional casualties reported on Thursday (Nov. 23). Tragically, these fatalities occurred as individuals attempted to traverse the swollen Muuoni river in Makueni county.
The impact of the floods extends beyond the loss of lives, as essential infrastructures have been washed away, and villages find themselves submerged.
The El Nino phenomenon has particularly ravaged the Coast, Northern, and Central Kenya regions, compounding the challenges faced by residents. Responding to the crisis, the Kenyan government has allocated 2.4 billion Kenyan Shillings (approximately 19 million USD) to assist those affected, as reported by the Nation news outlet. Peninah Malonza, the cabinet secretary for East African Community, the Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASALs) & Regional Development, conveyed this information.
The grim toll of the floods extends beyond Kenya, with the Horn of Africa witnessing over 100 fatalities and more than 700,000 people displaced since October 1, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The widespread displacement underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
