Defensive resilience stalls West Ham’s climb as Brighton holds firm in 0-0 draw

West Ham United has faced a setback in their pursuit of the Premier League’s top four as Brighton displayed resolute defending to secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw.

Alphonse Areola emerged as Brighton’s hero, denying several goal-scoring opportunities for the Hammers.

Despite grappling with defensive absences due to injuries and suspensions, Brighton managed to secure their first Premier League clean sheet of the season.

The Seagulls, buoyed by a spirited second-half performance, dominated possession with nearly 70 percent but struggled to convert their control into goals, highlighting a recurring issue with their cutting edge in the final third.

Areola’s stellar saves thwarted the attacking efforts of Danny Welbeck, Joao Pedro, Pascal Gross, and Adam Lallana, ensuring West Ham’s unbeaten run continued.

David Moyes’ side, accumulating 10 points from a possible 12 over the festive season, remains six points adrift of the coveted top four positions.

The absence of Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus, denied a chance to feature in his final club game before the Africa Cup of Nations, blunted West Ham’s threat.

James Ward-Prowse’s attempt, saved by Jason Steele before the break, highlighted the home side’s struggles in breaking the deadlock.

The draw proved pivotal for Brighton, earning them a point that lifted them above Manchester United into seventh place. However, despite this positive outcome, they trail West Ham by three points in the league standings.

The point earned by the Seagulls showcased their defensive prowess and demonstrated their ability to navigate challenges, while West Ham will be left ruing missed opportunities as they strive to close the gap on the top four.
