Gambian govt sets sail for enhanced connectivity with 2 new Kunta Kinteh-type ferries

The Gambian government has initiated the tendering process for the design and construction of two Kunta Kinteh-type ferries.
The announcement came during a press conference on Friday, where Ousman Jobarteh, the Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), shared crucial details about the ambitious project.
The GPA, after meticulous evaluation, has submitted the tender reports to the African Development Bank (ADB), anticipating swift progress upon contract signing.
Jobarteh stated, “Within six months, the new ferry, modeled after Kunta Kinteh, will be delivered.”
Surprisingly, the Ministry of Transport has concurrently advocated for the acquisition of a second ferry, a decision discussed and confirmed with governmental authorities.
This unexpected turn means that the upcoming contract involves the procurement of two state-of-the-art ferries rather than one.
Explaining the funding strategy, Mr. Jobarteh clarified, “If ADB supports one of the ferries through a grant, the GPA is prepared to engage with the contractor to address any potential funding gaps, ensuring the timely delivery of both ferries for the crucial Banjul/Barra route.”
Acknowledging the pivotal role of ferries in the country’s connectivity, Mr. Jobarteh emphasized the GPA’s commitment to providing a safer and more reliable ferry service.
“Our intention is to facilitate the seamless movement of the traveling public across the river, considering the socio-economic significance of connecting different points along the bank,” he stated.
