Seko Fofana’s early brilliance ignites Ivory Coast’s AFCON campaign in thrilling 2-0 victory

In a spectacular kick-off to the Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast seized control with Seko Fofana’s stunning goal within four minutes, followed by Jean-Philippe Krasso’s second-half strike, securing a 2-0 triumph over Guinea-Bissau.

The electrifying match unfolded at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium, where a jubilant crowd witnessed the hosts’ pursuit of a third AFCON crown.

Despite facing a team considered a tournament minnow, the Elephants showcased dominance, utilizing home advantage to secure a crucial three points in Group A. Fofana, the goal scorer, expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are very pleased to have given everyone who came here something to shout about, as well as everyone who watched us on television.”

Despite the victory, a slight disappointment loomed as only 36,858 fans attended the game in a 60,000-seat stadium.

Fofana, however, emphasized the tremendous support, countering the apparent shortfall in attendance.

The opening ceremony was a vibrant spectacle, featuring colorful performances and speeches from FIFA president Gianni Infantino, African football boss Patrice Motsepe, and Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara.

As the hosts aim to become the first nation to lift the trophy since 2006, legendary figures like Didier Drogba, who attended the match, added to the festive atmosphere in Abidjan.

Ivory Coast maintained its tradition of not losing the opening match of the AFCON since 1998, reinforcing their strong start to the tournament.

The game started slightly behind schedule due to a series of speeches, but once underway, Ivory Coast demonstrated urgency against Guinea-Bissau. Fofana’s early strike, a masterpiece from a Franck Kessie pass, set the tone for the match.

The attacking prowess continued, with Krasso’s second goal effectively sealing the contest just before the hour mark.

Ivorian coach Jean-Louis Gasset praised his team’s psychological strength, acknowledging the challenge of playing the opening game in front of a home crowd.

Looking ahead, Gasset expressed awareness of the upcoming test against Nigeria and their formidable striker, Victor Osimhen, emphasizing the need to elevate their game.

The AFCON action continues, with Nigeria set to face Equatorial Guinea at Ebimpe on Sunday, followed by Group B opening games between Egypt and Mozambique, and Ghana and Cape Verde.

Ivory Coast’s exhilarating start has set the stage for a thrilling tournament as they aim to make history on home soil.
