Palestinians decry “colonialism, apartheid” at UN court
Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki addressed the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of subjecting Palestinians to “colonialism and apartheid” and calling for an immediate, unconditional end to the occupation.
The ICJ, hosting hearings with evidence from 52 countries, including the US and Russia, faces Israel’s refusal to participate. Al-Maliki urged judges to declare the occupation illegal, emphasizing the need for justice after prolonged suffering.
The UN General Assembly sought an advisory opinion on Israel’s policies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, adding to international pressure amid the conflict in Gaza.
Al-Maliki highlighted the “genocide” in Gaza as a consequence of impunity. The ICJ must examine violations of Palestinian self-determination, the prolonged occupation, and measures altering Jerusalem’s status.
Israel criticized the “distorted” questions, and the court is expected to rule urgently by year-end. Pro-Palestinian protests outside the court called for justice and humane policies.
Human Rights Watch noted that advisory opinions could hold moral and legal authority, potentially impacting international law.
