Rohey Malick Lowe, the Lord Mayor of Banjul City Council (BCC), has unveiled an empowerment initiative to support market women.

Lowe disclosed this on Thursday January 5, 2022.

Speaking about the program, Lowe said, “I am happy to finally lay the foundation stone of the Better life Initiative at the Royal Albert Market in Banjul to empower many more women.”

She disclosed that the Banjul-Lagififat project implemented by Refela and funded by the Moroccan government will build 2 vegetable and fish sheds.

“Many thanks to a dear sister Mayor Amina who agreed to partner with us and Dr Najat of the UCLG_Africa who facilitated the process and the Refela Secretariat for making this happen,” Lowe said.

She added, “To the contractor, the CEO of the city Council Mr Batchilly, the Planning and Development Director of the Council Mr. Katim Touray, Adviser to Council, Mr. Macoumba Sanneh and indeed our able Refela National Coordinator Madame Isatou Njie I say a big thank you, bravo and well done.

“The project started in November 2022 and is anticipated to finish by end of February 2023.”

“When women lead, they ensure women’s issues are taken into consideration. Empower more women to get to leadership and decision-making positions for equality and inclusiveness,” she concluded.
