Banjul Mayor, Malick Lowe, leads youth climate crusade with Bloomberg philanthropies

In response to growing concerns among global youth about climate change, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe has announced that Banjul will be joining Bloomberg Philanthropies’ ambitious Youth Climate Action Fund initiative.

This initiative aims to empower young people aged 15 to 24 to spearhead climate solutions in cities worldwide. Banjul is one of 100 cities selected to receive funding and technical support to drive youth-led climate action.

The Youth Climate Action Fund, backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies, will provide Banjul with $50,000 in microgrants to fuel innovative projects initiated by young residents. These projects may range from tree-planting drives and recycling initiatives to educational campaigns and disaster preparedness programs.

Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe emphasized the critical role of youth in addressing the climate crisis, stating, “Climate change is real, and it is here. Small island cities like ours will be most affected by its impact. We must develop and embrace innovative and bold solutions globally if we want to even begin to fight its impact.”

Cities participating in the program are encouraged to allocate the initial $50,000 within six months to unlock an additional $100,000 for further youth-driven projects over the course of one year. Banjul residents between the ages of 15 and 24 can find more information and submit project ideas on the REFELA, The Gambia Facebook page.

This collaborative effort between local governments and young leaders is part of a broader strategy to tackle climate change at the city level. Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund recognizes the urgency of engaging youth in climate action and equips cities with the resources needed to amplify their impact.

The selection of Banjul for this initiative highlights the city’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future and empowering its youth to be at the forefront of climate activism.
