Daylight Africa documentary featured in AAWIC virtual film festival

Daylight Africa documentary has been featured in the African American Women In Cinema (AAWIC) which coincides with the 2024 Summer Olympics from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

This landmark festival will pay homage to Josephine Baker, a legendary figure in the entertainment industry, and Alice Coachman, the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in 1948 for the high jump.

In a celebration of global talent and rich legacies, the festival promises a diverse lineup of films that honor trailblazers who have paved the way for future generations.

Presented in collaboration with African American Weekend, this event is made possible through the dedicated support of the Honorable Mayor Mohamed Gnabaly of L’ÃŽle-Saint-Denis, France.

The festival will feature “Dear Josephine,” directed by Amber Monet, which delves into the life of Josephine Baker—an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress celebrated as the “Black Venus,” “Black Pearl,” “Bronze Venus,” and “Creole Goddess.”

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker was a pivotal figure in the French Resistance during World War II, earning the Resistance Medal, Croix de Guerre, and Légion d’honneur. “Dear Josephine” captures Baker’s remarkable life and enduring influence.

Another highlight is “September 11th UnSung Sheros,” a documentary that honors six Black women who played crucial roles during the 9/11 attacks, including the first female NYPD chaplain and five 9-1-1 operators.

Their significant contributions have largely gone unrecognized until now. Directed by Ambassador Suzan Cook, the film ensures their stories are finally told.

“Journey to the Motherland – Through Daylight Africa” follows travelers on a transformative journey to Africa, led by visionary pan-African leader Sheikh Musa Drammeh. From Dakar to Goree Island and Senegal’s Smart City to the historic city of Saint Louis, the film captures their profound experiences as they reconnect with their roots and explore Africa’s cultural heritage and economic opportunities.

The virtual festival will also feature exclusive bonus content, including an interview with Sharon-Preston Folta, daughter of the global icon Louis Armstrong.

Interested participants in this historic virtual event are encouraged to visit AAWIC website: www.aawic.org to get ticket for $21.99.
